Item: Can academics write with clarity and precision? The folks at the Chronicle of Higher Education tackled this question in an article published under the perfectly obvious title, “Trading Up With Gilgamesh.”

Item: Dust off those old Ozzy Ozborne records and spin ‘em backwards. Subliminal messages really do work.

Bonus item: Cool new military slang fresh from the sandpit.

Close observers of politics noted some years back that there was … well, a certain poetry in the blustering of then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. So poetry can come from a Republican. But can it come from spam? Judge for yourself.

Almost gothic

I first encountered the term “steampunk” a couple of years ago, after reading Neal Stephenson’s “The Diamond Age.” Now the concept seems to be popping up everywhere I look.

Mostly, I just love the word, the awkward union of these two nouns hitherto rarely found in each other’s company.

I’m not sure what the point of the genre/trend/fad is — why should we get excited about how H.G. Wells might have envisioned Star Wars? And I still don’t get what’s so punk about it, unless you consider that some of the eponymous musical genre’s predecessors dressed like Edwardian dandies.

On an unrelated note, there are fools and then there are fools.

Pardon the departure from our established headline conventions. Anyworld is entering one of its cyclical periods of surrealistic contemplation. As we recover our bearings, some thoughts to ponder …

What did you never want to know about yourself? What’s your true religion? Is anything really taboo? What are your real feelings about race? What is beautiful in your eyes? Are you and your significant other on crack?
